Poly(aryl ether)s containing phthalazinone moieties, a series of novel high performance engineering plastics developed by our research group, has much better thermal resistance, excellent mechanical properties, chemical resistance properties and radiation stability, therefore, have a strong competitive capability in international markets. However, the pure resin is difficult to process for its high viscosity. Therefore, blending and reinforcing methods were very useful to expand its applications. In this paper, short carbon fiber(CF) reinforced PPBES composites were prepared, PES was blended with PPESK and PPBES.The CF reinforced PPBES composites were prepared by melt-extruding. The average length of fiber, mechanical properties and the interface were investigated by the polarizing microscope, SEM and so on. The results showed that the average length of short fiber for in all proportions prepared were above 100μm, the tensile strength increased to 107 Mpa with increasing CF contents up to 23%, the impact strength decreased to 4.95KJ/m-2 with increasing CF contents up to 10%. Scanning electron microscopy studies showed the composites had a weak interaction. The PPESK/PES and PPBES/PES blends with different composition were prepared with melt-mixing method. Their melting processabilities, miscibility, mechanical properties and the interface were investigated by the extruding current, DSC, SEM and so on. The results showed that the blends of the PPESK/PES and PPBES/PES were partially miscible, the melting processabilities of PPESK and PPBES were good improved with the addition of PES. The tensile strength of PPESK/PES blends increased with increasing PES contents, Scanning electron microscopy studies showed the PPESK/PES blends had a weak interaction. the tensile strength of PPBES/PES blends increased to 98 Mpa with increasing PES contents up to 25%.
