Biodiesel are mainly composed by fatty acid-first ester and second ester, which are made from the chemical process of reacting vegetable oils or animals fats (transesterification). It has the similar characteristics with diesel and can be used as alternative fuel on diesel engine. Biodiesel gradually attracts people's attention and is seen as the strategic alternative fuel for diesel for its renewable character and friendly character to environment.For deeply understanding diesel engine performance when fueled with biodiesel and the concoction of biodiesel/diesel and optimizing the applying technology of biodiesel on diesel engine, the study on diesel engine fueled with biodiesel was conducted. Based on deeply understanding to biodiesel produce process and its physical and chemical characteristics, the paper studied the using performance of biodiesel and the concoction of biodiesel/diesel. Furthermore, the experimental optimization study on the mixed ratio of biodiesel/diesel was carried out aiming at decreasing the PM emission.Biodiesel used in experiment was soybean fatty acid-first ester. Biodiesel was concocted with diesel in a volume ratio of 20 per cent and 30 per cent respectively. The experiment was carried out on Sofim four-cylinder turbo charged direct injection diesel engine. The whole tests on engine power, fuel economics and emissions on diesel engine fueled with pure biodiesel and the concoction are conducted respectively, and the comparison investigation on these two cases was carried out. The results show that when the diesel engine fueled with pure biodiesel and the concoctions the engine power has similar character with those of diesel, and the fuel consumption slightly increased, but the specific energy consumption decreased slightly. When the diesel engine fueled with pure biodiesel, soot emission evidently decreased. The concoctions also had the similar trends, but they went down slightly.For evidently decreasing the soot emission of diesel engine fueled with concocted fuel and keeping other performances, the paper compared and selected the additive. Through testing the engine performance with different ratio concocted fuels, the optimized mixed-ratio of concoction was obtained. The results show that the soot emission would evidently decrease, while the engine power and fuel consumption kept constant when the engine fueled with the optimized mixed-ratio concocted fuel. The study results reached the anticipated aim and were able to be popularized.
