The Gannan area is situated at Yellow River and Yangtze River's upstream region, has provided the important supply of water source for Yellow River and Yangtze River. But in recent years, due to man-made and natural factors, the Gannan area's ecological environment has encountered the certain extent destruction and has affected the water supply function. As our country important rivers and streams source area, is also our country's one of ten tibetan national minority autonomous prefectures, Gannan (state) water source region's protection not only relates our country's ecological and economic security, and has political and social meaning.All along, due to the limitations and constraints in historical and cultural traditions, and natural conditions, Gannan area's economic development quite lags. At the same time, as an integral part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau district, Gannan areas has fragile eco-environment characteristics. In division of main functional areas, Gannan area is restricted and prohibited zones. So, Gannan area is facing dual pressures and objective of economic development and environmental protection。The article takes ecological protection as a breakthrough point, takes the Gannan area as the whole, analyses the problem of development in Gannan, proves sustainable development is inevitable choice to protection of water source region, internal development unifies with the exterior benefit compensation mechanism is important content of protection to water resource region, and pointing out that the protection of water source place should adjust own industrial structure, establish industry environment may be carrying and combine with the exterior benefit compensation mechanism.Through the analysis, the article comes to the conclusion that to realize protection of Gannan water source place, the key is to build a reasonable mechanism for economic development and ecological protection mechanism, it is necessary to further improve the existing system and system, so as to build whole mechanisms of ecological protection and economic development in water source place and achieve coordinated and sustainable development of ecology and economy.
