Activated sludge process is a method of biologic wastewater treatment that is used most extensively in the world, but excess sludge production is highly. How to deal with the excess sludge is a problem that must to be solved quickly. Traditional methods used to dispose the excess sludge such as ozone oxidation, chlorine oxidation and sludge combustion are not to reduce the production of excess sludge. Therefore, the most effective method of solving the problem of excess sludge is to reduce the production of the excess sludge in the course of wastewater treatment. This paper focuses on biomass yields, effects of wastewater treatment and mechanism of o-aminophenol, 3,3',4',5-tetrachlorosalicylanilide, protease and cellulase. The main conclusions of this paper are as follows:When AP of 15mg/L and TCS of 1.2mg/L, observed growth yields (Yobs) of the sludge are reduced by 21% and 52% with low reduction of COD removal efficiency. Removal rate of ammonia decreased by 30% with TCS but was not affected obviously by AP. The dewater ability of sludge was not affected by the two uncouplers. The SVI values of sludge with TCS increased slightly.AP and TCS led to an increase in dehydrogenase activity (DHA) of sludge. Flocs of the sludge treated by AP and TCS were smaller and incompact than comparison sludge obviously. According to microscope observation, the sludge microbe population change. Meanwhile quantities and kinds of protozoan and metazoan reduced.Pretreatment with both protease and cellulase resulted to poorer sludge reduction. Comparing with celluluse, the protease affected the sludge reduction much more clearly. SVI value and dewater ability of the sludge treated by protease with AP or TCS were not different from the comparison sludge. The same effect is obtained with cellulase.Results obtained through the atlas of denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis showed that quantities and kinds of microbe of the sludge treated by protease are most, while the sludge treated by cellulose was similar with comparison sludge. The quantities and kinds of microbe of sludge with TCS were less than that of control sample.Both AP and TCS are organic acid which can ionize H~+. H~+ plays an important role in detachment of catabolism and anabolism. The dates of experiment validated that the model ofmicrobe growth and energy spilling also applied to the growth of sludge treated by AP andTCS under the condition of conventional ratio of concentration of sustrate to microbe ofsludge.
