Prototype is the plane graph of the human body shape. It lays the foundation for the structural design of clothing. Many developed countries have created prototypes of their own, such as the American-style prototype, the British-style prototype, and the Japanese-style prototype. In Japan, not only the clothing enterprises, but also the clothing institutes have their own prototypes, for instance, the cultural-style prototype from Bunka Fashion College, Doreme-style prototype from Sugino Gakuen, and Tanaka-type prototype from Tanaka school. With the development of China's reform and opening up, research on foreign prototypes started in the 1980's. Especially the research on Japanese culture-style prototype greatly promoted the development of prototype technology in China. A good example is the Chinese-style prototype and Mi-style prototype created by Donghua University. At present, Japanese culture-style prototype is adopted by most Chinese clothing institutions for two reasons. One is China and Japan are both Asian countries, and the people in both countries have the same color of skin and similar body, which makes the Japanese prototype more suitable for Chinese people. The other is that Donghua University translated the teaching materials from Bunka Fashion College, which makes it possible for colleges to use and teach the prototype. The Japanese culture-style prototype is characterized as simple, flexible and easy to learn and to teach. It greatly reduces the repetitive work of calculation and the drawing of basic lines. The design line can be approached in a way similar to drawing lines freely. Therefore, it's less dependent on operator's experience and its comprehensive performance is better than the prevailing domestic pattern-making technology. It is a effective tool to achieve the combination of art and technology, and an ideal technological platform for fashion design. The garments are put into production only after styling design, structural design and technical design. After the research on Japanese garments, some experts and professionals became aware that high quality garments are determined by top pattern-making technology. From this, we know, to better the quality of Chinese clothing products, we must improve the pattern-making technology in Chinese enterprises like those in Japan. However, the pattern-making from prototype is not yet widely used In China. Most of garment enterprises in China are using proportional distribution method, since the chief patternmakers in most domestic garment enterprises are in their 50's. These patternmakers have much experience, the majority of whom are good at proportional pattern-making, whereas know little about prototype, so the proportional pattern-making method are prevailed in most garment enterprises in China. For ordinary styles, this is an acceptable way, but faced with a demanding market, it seems far from enough, especially when encountered with complex designs, the pattern made from it will be hard to realize the design concept. Therefore, to improve the quality of Chinese garments, we must widen the use of prototype.Although there are some prototypes of our own in China, research on application is not further enough yet. Therefore, I suppose the best way to use Japanese culture-style prototype is to make some necessary change for our use. The change made to the prototype is determined by human body figures, which calls for measurements of the human body. As a result of China's vast land ang a huge number of people, there is great difference among the human bodies in the north and the south. The paper takes the northeast and north region of China (Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Inner Mongolia, Hebei, Shandong, Beijing) as an example and argues how to use Japanese culture-style prototype. Specific practices are as followings. Measurements of 11 sample projects of 500 mature women (18-22 years old) from Northeast China and North China are taken on random, and the original data are dealt with the means of average and standard deviation. Then the 11 values are compared with those of Japanese woman to analyze the difference between Japanese women and women from north China and suggestions are introduced to make adjustments to Japanese culture-style prototype. The paper begins with the emergence and development of Japanese culture-style prototype, analyzes the types and features of it, further explores the structural theory in order to advocate the use of prototype pattern-making technology. After the analytical processing of data, a little suggestion is made to draw people's attention. That is in the use of Japanese prototype, we can't copy it, but apply it according to the features of Chinese people's body shapes.
