In 1960s and 1970s the U. S. federal government enacted many federal environmental legislations with the awareness improvement of American public toward environmental protection. This thesis focuses on the case of Tennessee Valley Authority v. Hill under this background. By introducing the judicial proceeding of this case in the District Court, Circuit Court and the Supreme Court, this thesis analyzes the base and guarantee of American environmental protection. The facts of protecting the endangered species and their critical habitats shows that the U. S. attaches importance to the biodiversity conservation. When it comes into conflicts with economy interests the U. S. decides to protect the former by using the strict legislations and judicial judgments.The introduction mainly reviews the studies of American and Chinese scholars toward the Tennessee Valley Authority v. Hill. It also introduces the formation of research documents, the critical and solving problems and the research approach.The main body includes four parts:Part one analyzes the status of endangered species in the U. S. since 1970s, highlighting the policies of endangered species protection and the efforts of non-governmental environmental protection organizations in protecting the environment.Part two introduces the background of the Tennessee Valley Authority v. Hill, deepening the understanding of the laws and agencies relating to the case.Part three analyzes the judicial proceeding of Tennessee Valley Authority v. Hill, including the brief introduction of this case, the judicial proceedings in the District Court , Circuit Court and the Supreme Court and the legislation basis.Part four exposes the influence of Tennessee Valley Authority v. Hill, including the summary of relating legislations and their application, and the importance of this case in promoting the system of American environmental protection and biodiversity conservation. The conclusion summarizes this thesis and concludes the inspiration of this case itself and its enlightenment to Chinese environmental protection.
