With the EDM industry expansion, as well as the market competition getting intense, EDM products especially for reciprocating feed wire EDM and die-sinking EDM are in a severe condition. Because of the wide appilication of the networking technology, the requirements of security and safety for numerical control systems become more stricted. Under these pressures, the EDM manufacturing enterprises are eager to find out ways to improve the quality and efficiency of their production, reduce costs and improve the competitiveness of products as well. To solve this problem, this thesis presents a solution of an implementing technique for EDM-CNC system based on embedded Linux.The system utilizes the embedded Linux system as the operating system, which can greatly meet the network security need; as an open-source software, the system can remarkablly reduce the production costs, the matured R&D solutions can also shorten the research and development cycle. In addition, the real-time patches for the Linux kernel can help the system to improve the real-time processing capability. Qt/Qtopia Core is used to develop the modern style GUI for the prototype of WEDM-CNC system.In order to examine the proformance of the prototype software system, a wrie EDM machine tool was connected with the self-developed WEDM-CNC system. Following the regular operating steps, we finally complete the test cutting successfully.In this thesis, the results of the research work offer a new solution for the EDM-CNC development to the manufacturers, it provides a capability of lowering the development and production cost, thus improving the competitiveness of the machine tool products. Several key technologies based on embeded Linux demonstrate good examples for furture EDM-CNC system developments, such as the construction of the embedded Linux, the application of Qt/Qtopia core tools, software development process for application software and so forth..
