Continuous Basalt Fiber(CBF) is a high-tech fiber produced by the former Soviet Union after years of research. In recent years, CBF can be produced in quantity in China. Compared to other high-performance fibers, CBF has many advantages, such as good integrated performance, high cost-effective, widespread applications, wonderful development prospects and so on. Therefore, research activities of the CBF is very practical significant. At present, the study of basalt fiber production is mainly concentrated on the preparation of basalt fibers, however, literatures and materials related to properties of basalt fibers and its weft process are still limited, the thesis aims at grasping the properties of basalt fiber more deeply and make a new try on weft-knitted techniques. This subject does some research on basalt fibers in the followings.1. Several properties of basalt fibers and yarns, such as statistical analysis on the tensile strength of basalt fibers, tensile intensity, chemical resistance, temperature resistance etc. were carried out and analyzed, and then the knowledge of special performance of basalt fibers could be obtained.2. Study on the process of knitting. The appropriate gauge of hand flat knitting machine was chosen based on loop efficiency and loop strength. In addition, several representative single-faced fabrics and double-faced fabrics were knitted using basalt fiber yarns with different specifications. It also reported the effects of different knitting parameters on the process of knitting and appearance or quality of fabrics.3. Some dimensional parameters of fabric knitted above were tested and their dimensional properties and the loop shapes were studied, including the dimensional stability and the relations between fabric densities and the loop lengths. In this way, the dimensions of the fabrics can be predicted before knitting. Furthermore, the author observed the special loop shapes in basalt fiber fabrics and discussed the effect of basalt fiber performance on loop geometrical structure.4. Study on evaluation of basalt fiber damage degree. The quantitative method used for evaluating the fiber damage degree was presented. The relations between the fiber damage and the loop lengths were also analyzed. The results have shown that there is an optimum point at which the fiber damage is minimum during the knitting process. This is helpful to choose the right loop lengths before knitting.
