In the 1980s, the USA began to realize the problem of the brownfield and then took a series of redevelopment actions to deal with them. The thesis chooses the city of Pittsburg as a case to analyze the causes of the brownfield and the process of related redevelopment and the experiences pertaining to the brownfield governing. The thesis consists of three parts: introduction, context and conclusion.The introduction part tells the reasons to choose the topic, and reviews the state of academic research and provides some explanations relatively.Part one reviews the industrial growth and decline of the city and the pollution because of the economic development, which is the basis of the analysis in the following text.Part two centers on the Pittsburg and analyze the causes of the brownfield areas in terms of the adjustment of industrial structure, transition of regional economy, the rise of suburbanization, and the reform of transformation.Part three and four are the major parts of this thesis. The third part discusses the process of the governing from the evaluation to the public—private cooperation during the governing. This part emphasizes the success of the Washington Landing redevelopment. Part four refers to the experiences relating to the governing and the redevelopment, which tells us some lessons to learn and the economical sustained development.The conclusion part summarizes the relations between the redevelopment of the brownfields and economical sustainment and puts emphasis on a brief conclusion that we should attach importance to sustainability in the process of redevelopment.
