The ecological environment is the basis of the survival and development for human which are inseparable from the support of natural ecosystems. The water resources is the foundational natural resource and the strategic economic resource, and the controlling essential factor for ecological environment. But since long, we pay great attention on the economic and social development , ignoring the carrying capacity of the water resources, and focus on the water resources' development, actually does not have equal emphasis the ecological protection. Therefore, it has extremely important theory and practical significance to be reasonable and legitimate demand for the ecological water demand, and to manage , rational exploit, distribute and use of the water resources by the new idea.Reservoir is the key and important projects among the water resources development. The ecological water requirement being studied as the reservoir object not only may be used to guide the current management the reservoir, also is the important reference for the reservoir's design .specially for the dead water level of reservoir.The main research results and the characteristic of the article may sum up as follows:(1) To analyse the ecology and relationship between the reservoir and river,and to propose that the reservoir and the downstream rivers (a certain length) are regarded as the smallest unit of river systems, by this to study the ecological water requirement and avoid the limitations of a single study for reservoir ecology or river ecology.(2)To base on the analysis of the natural features, the basic elements of ecological changes and the ecological protection objectives, and to establish the studies scope, the concept and structure of the ecological water requirement.(3)To introduce blind number theory and methods , and to quantity of the ecological water requirement from many kinds of uncertainty of the reservoir ecological system; to obtain the value sector that provids the elastic range which may be carried out, and to obtain the confidence level that supplis many and quantification information, in order to eliminate the uncertainty.(4) In case studies, obtain the value sector and the confidence level of the ecological water requirement for Shuanxi Reservoir during dry season, and to provides decision-makers with clear results.
