In-situ iron matrix composite reinforced with TiC or VC particles is a kind of good wear resistant material,so it is of great importance to study on in-situ TiCp/Fe and VCp/Fe composites.At present,despite the near-forming and accumulative forming are promising technologies,the required shape,accuracy and surface finish can not be achieved directly in manufacturing process for most metal materials,as a result,it is necessary to machine the materials.So this paper comprehensively and systematically showed the cutting properties of in-situ TiC_p/Fe,VC_p/Fe composites,and supplied the theoretical basis for the commercial produce of those composites.This paper showed the preparation technology,morphology and mechanical properties of TiC_p/Fe,VC_p/Fe composites first.Then the cutting forces were measured,on the basic of which,empirical equations of cutting forces were established,and the effects of each elements were analysed.The cutting mechanics of TiC_p/Fe,VC_p/Fe composites were analysed by means of observing chip shapes of TiC_p/Fe,VC_p/Fe composites and measuring the surface finishs of the composites achieving by different tools.The cutting property of in-situ TiC_p/Fe composite was related with its mechanical properties and the content of Ti,the strength and hardness of composite with high content of Ti were low.So the cutting forces of TiC_p/Fe composite with high Ti content were low.However,chip shapes and surface finish were unideal,and work-hardening was serious.And cutting forces were fluctuated serious.While the strength and hardness of TiC_p/Fe composites with low content of Ti were high,which caused higher cutting forces.However,chip shapes and surface finish of TiC_p/Fe composite with low Ti content were better, and their work-hardening was weaker,and cutting forces were fluctuated slightly.With high hardness,and small deformation coefficient of chips,machining with small depth of cutting did not suit for in-situ VC_p/Fe composite.Cutting forces of VC_p/Fe composite were large,while value of surface finish was low in machining process.Annealing improved the cutting properties of in-situ TiC_p/Fe,VC_p/Fe composites,cutting forces and value of surface finish decreased,chip shapes was easily controlled when machining those materials.
