One of the effective measures to guard against metal corruption is using anti-corrosive coating. However, solvent-based anti-corrosion coating has many disadvantages, such as high VOC content, toxicity, high cost etc. So, a water-based epoxy zinc-rich anti-corrosion coating FXT, which chooses zinc powder with the role of cathodic protection as a major filler, is developed in lab. In this paper, the modification of epoxy resin E-44 is studied. A series of modified epoxy resins are prepared by controlling mass-ratio, the reaction temperature and reaction time. The top conditions of epoxy resin modified reaction are determined and a water based epoxy resin is developed by testing the performance of infrared spectrum, solubility, stability of water-based system and the pH value of modified epoxy resin. FXT is developed by using water-based epoxy resin RE-44 and non-modified epoxy resin E-44 as a film-forming material, SO-II for the curing agent and zinc powder for the production of the pigment and filler. The influences of epoxy resin E-44 incorporation, types and volume of curing agent, zinc powder type and amount of filler, solvents, defoamer, film forming auxiliary on the performances of the coating are discussed. The best formula for FXT is determined and its performances are also evaluated. The affecting factors to drying time of coating, adhesion and saline endurance of coating are analyzed and studied. The favorite substrate and temperature, salinity, acid and basic resistance and oil resistance are studied in the lab to determine the scope and application conditions of FXT. Anti-corrosion mechanisms of the water-based epoxy zinc-rich anti-corrosion coating are discussed. Compared with the current solvent-based zinc-rich coating, the water-based epoxy zinc-rich anti-corrosion coating FXT has excellent performances, lower VOC content and toxicity, no pollution, lower cost and no fire risk, and is a new excellent coating of environment protection.
