Recent year has viewed a substantial change in tyre manufacture, duringwhich bias tyre manufacture transitioned to mediterian tire manufacturesuccessfully.Good quality of adhesion between rubber and steel is key to mediterian tiremanufacture. Resorcinol novolak resins are adhesives specially designed formediterian tire compounding. Presently, resorcinol-bisphenyl A epoxy resinmodified by styrene is widely used on the project. All side effects of the resin, such as volatile, hydroscopic and coalesced phenomena etc., can be removeddrastically with free resorcinol content of the resin being decreased under 1.0%by reacting styrene with resorcinol and being applied a vacuum distillation athigh temperatures. In this paper, basing on the cure of bisphenyl A epoxy by resorcinol, theinfluence and mechanism of styrene modification on the resin is investigatedfinely. It is thought that the ability of the resin conjoint with methylene isweakened by reacting styrene with resorcinol and other active components viaelectrophilic addition. However, according to the binary adhesive theory, onlywas the resin accept methylene during compounding process can it promote theadhesion greatly. Hence, adhesion promoting ability of the resin is also impairedby the styrene modification. On basis of the above investigation, great emphasis was laid on co-blendingof melamine and the resin (IR) under high temperatures in this paper. It wasfound that the hydroscopic and coalesced phenomena can be removed obviouslyafter the addition of melamine and that a high resistance property to impact strength (SEM) and hindered phenomenon of the sublimate of resorcinol (TG-IR,DSC) were also observed. However, the resin got a high viscosity and pooradhesion ability in compounding while a large dosage of melamine was added.Styrene-melamine modification took the advantages of the above two arts. Aresin product, non-fuming, non-hydroscopic and with a free resorcinol content of3.23%, a softening point of 90~99℃, a pull-out force of 443N/cm~2, was obtainedat the following conditions:n(resorcinol):n(epoxy) is 1.8:1.0, trisbenzylphospholine dosage is 1.5g, curetemperature is 140~160℃, cure time is 2.0h, PTSA dosage is 1.0g, styrenedosage is 3.1g, modification temperature is 130~140℃, modification time is 2.0h,melamine dosage is 2.0g, modification temperature is 180~190℃, modificationtime is 3.0h, and a vacuum distillation at 130~140℃for 2.0h is also applied.
