N-Butyl chloride is an important fine chemical raw material with wide uses and hugecommercial demands. One of the important and urgent uses is to synthesize n-butyl lithium,in which n-butyl chloride with high purity is needed. At present, there are mainly fiveapproaches to n-butyl chloride, including chlorination by SOCl2, PCl3, HCl gas, NaCl orconcentrated hydrochloric acid, but the highest purity is about 90%. In our method,n-butyl chloride with high purity was prepared by chemical reaction and rectificationseparation coupling technology from the replacement halogenation reaction of n-butylalcohol with hydrogen chloride gas under 105℃and catalysis of louise acid. GC (gaschromatography) was employed to determine the composition of reaction liquid withvarious reaction times to study the reaction kinetics when the concentration of hydrogenchloride gas was supposed to hold constant, which reveals that the reaction rate hasfirst-order relationship with the concentration of n-butyl alcohol.The reaction rectificationdevices with laboratorial scale were set up primarily. Furthermore, the design for a 900t/arectifying tower and corresponding parameters were accomplished primarily which pavethe way for the industrial application of this new route. Generally, the chemical reactionand rectification separation coupling technology can prepare n-butyl chloride with highyield and purity of 99.5% with clean process and so would have greater competitiveadvantage.
