Electric Discharge Machining (EDM) is a new type of nontraditional machining and has been developing for a few decades. The EDM is used for machining super-hard conductive materials, especially for the cutting tool or mold fabrication. With the rapid development of science and technology, the urgent requirements for the hard-to-cut materials were proposed. Therefore the main task of this paper is to research and design a new numerical EDM machine of three dimensions.In this paper, EDM theory was firstly analyzed according to the documentation mainly, and the mechanism of EDM was then discussed, the effective factors of EDM process had been studied. Put forward a numerical control system based on industrial PC, the industrial PC realized the control to the whole machine by communicating from ISA bus and serial port.The servo control system was discussed in this paper and a lot of research and analysis about the machining state was made. The paper designed a numerical servo control system based on average voltage detection. By analysis and calculate the characteristic parameters, deduced the general requirement to the system of rapid response and high precision, and finally achieved the aim of controlling three-axes EDM machine by using AC servo system. At the same time, designed an adjustable numerical pulse generator based on PIC chip, the industrial PC controlled the wave of pulse through serial port. This design was in favor of controlling, and offered the basis to the development of the future.At last, the paper programmed the software taking advantage of object-oriented language and modular structure to designing the whole system. Aimed at the actual demand programmed parts of codes and the designed of human-machine interface is the most important.The experiment showed that the system was stable and reliable for machining and the control operation was convenient...
