Polyethylene (PE) is a new and special engineering material which has a lot of excellent properties such as: high temperature resistant (resisting quality) and concentrated base resistant. It has been one of the most popular special engineering materials in the world and will have a bright future. But PE has its own defects, for example the bad property of hydrophilic. So in this paper we focus on the research of modification of property of PE nonwoven web by sulfonation.First, the hydrophilic property of PE nonwoven web was improved by sulfonation with Chlorosulfonic Acid . Contact angle,SEM,EDX, the electronically strength analysis apparatus of fabric, moisture content, exchange capacity and the property of concentrated base resistant testing have been used to characterize the properties of the sulfonated PE and the effect of time, temperature and the ratio of reactants on the hydrophilic property of PE are illustrated in detail. The optimal conditions of the polyethylene nonwoven web surface sulfonation have been discussed .The result shows that not only the hydrophilic property of PE nonwoven n of PE nonwoven web are obtained at 80 ℃, 1.5 h , the rate about the quantity of PE nonwoven web and the volume of Chlorosulfonic Acid is 5:1.Second,theweb is excellently improved but also good stretch intensity and higher rate of sulfonatio sulfonated PE nonwoven web has been studied as ion-exchange membrane of electrolyzer. Because of the time limit,we investigated the bipolar plate voltage of electrolyzer only. The result shows that the time and the dose of sulfonating agent are key factors of controlling the bipolar plate voltage of electrolyzer.
