During oil well testing, the well tester was usually descended to a predetermined depth and then testing the parameters of the stratum. Whether the well tester was descended to the right place or not will influence the quality of well test greatly. The depth measurement system discussed in this paper can be used to monitoring the depth of well tester when it descending in a well. The system can also display the depth datum in real time and storage the data automatically, So that the well tester can be descended to the exact depth. The measurement system was made up of a single chip system with keyboard and Liquid Crystal Display. It has the functions of signal collecting, keyboard controlling, serial communicating and so on. The system also has the function of reckon by timw, then it can write down the time when closing or opening the well as well as any other time indispensable to well test. The application of the depth monitoring system in oil field will increase the precision of the downhole depth measuring of well tester, what's more, operating conveniently.First, the depth measurement principle was introduced, then the hardware structure and the designing characteristics of the monitoring system were described, and then the software was introduced, several important software flowcharts were given. The research work in these theses is described as follows: Firstly, Research on theory of well testing technology and depth measuring ways. According to the well testing requirement, the singlechip system with 80C32 and interface circuit is designed. Secondly, a software system with strong function, convenient operation and concise interface is designed based on careful locale checking and the operation of well testing. Thirdly, the testing result nicely proves the stability design in both software and hardware aspects, at the same time, something waiting for more studies were also found.
