Based on the literature and locale investigation, this paper briefly introduces the requirements about machining technology for crankshaft threaded hole, compares the differences of several machining methods, including the advantage, disadvantage and the applicable situation. Combine with the work condition in automobile engine factory, the paper summarizes the most commonly encountered problems in tapping process, analyses the causation and influence factors, general solving measures is also putting forward.By reviewing orthogonal and oblique cutting model of cutting tools, combine with tapping process and the characteristic of tap structure, cutting load resulting from tapping process is researched, a mechanistic model for the prediction of tapping torque and axial force is established by using discretization technique. Moreover, sum up the modeling method and step for tap;The paper focus on the tapping speciality of screw tap, and the influence between geometrical parameters and cutting performance, targeting the minimum tapping and axial force, the optimum design of geometrical parameters is done, especially the flute shape. According to the optimum result, the CAD model is built; Finally, by measuring, testing, comparing, and analyzing taps, including geometrical parameters and materials of coating, verifys the optimum result, and give some advices to improve finished product rate and prolong the life of tap.
