With the wide application of large gear in many important departments such as ships, mining, metallurgy, electric power, aerospace, etc, high precise measuring means for large gear is therefore required urgently. However, nowadays measuring technology of large gear is still not perfect, and domestic equipment for the measurement of large gear is insufficient. So it's high time to develop the error measuring instruments of large gear.Based on the analysis of characteristics for large gear and the comparison of domestic and foreign measuring principle and technology, measuring method of large gear has been researched in this paper and in-suit measurement of large gear based on CMM is presented and practiced consequently, using a small equipment to detect large workpiece is the basic thought of this method. It means that establishing the appropriate benchmarks of measurement, using minimal structure of equipment to measure the corresponding parameters of large gear on machine.The technique of in-suit measurement for large gear has been deeply researched, and the measuring prototype has been developed. The project consists of four sections -- the establishment of the whole measuring thought, R&D of data acquisition system, pivotal machine design and precision analysis, system software design and development. On the part of the whole measuring thought, the working principle and component of measuring system of large gear have been expounded. In the section of data acquisition, according to the selected probe and data acquisition card, the signal conditioning circuit of probe has been designed and developed. On the pivotal machine design and precision analysis part, the coordinate unification thought and its solutions have been put forward, the idiographic design of project and the making of equipment have been completed, and positioning accuracy of the machine has been analyzed. In the system software design and development section, system measuring and control platform has been established based on C++Builder6. The data acquisition andmovement controlling have been realized, and the software of in-suit profile measurement of large gear has been developed. Finally, real-time data acquisition display, error assessment, measurement results display and reports print have been realized in the software system.During the design and development of in-suit measuring for large gear, it shows that the principle is correct and the technology is feasible based on a large amount of experiments and analysis.
