Technology of CNC is widely applied increasingly in field of modern manufacturing. Higher requirements of function and performance of CNC system are put forward by many kinds of advanced manufacturing technologies. Those conventional special CNC systems can't adapt the development of manufacturing. As a result, it is becoming a very trend to research open architecture CNC system. In recent years, with the prompt development of computer technology, PC, which is of powerful capability of resource management, is developing towards standard interface and open architecture. The paper takes advantage of PC to develop an open architecture CNC system. This CNC system is applied practically on a CNC milling machine and a machining center, which proves the reliability and openness of the system. With appearance of new theories and technologies in field of status monitoring, achievements of this field are getting widely applied. Owing to the complexity of structure and intensity of technologis of CNC machine, Status monitoring for it is becoming an important application of monitoring technologies. While because of the intelligence and open architecture of open CNC system, machine status monitoring system is able to be built in an unusual form.In respect of machine status monitoring, which is a special application of monitoring technology, this paper proposes that by taking good use of intelligence and open architecture of CNC system, monitoring system can be integrated with CNC system, which will also expand functions of the CNC system. In so doing, manufacturing process control and machine status monitoring can be performed by the CNC system alone. With a system platform developed in the paper, experiments are performed, which prove that the project is feasible and the system is able to get information conveniently. Further more, interface of remote distance fault diagnosis of the system is developed and is tested by connecting the system to network.
