Reservoir is the important fresh-water source. However, with the expansion of population and development of social economy, the reservoir water environment increasingly deteriorates. The water environment problems of the hydropower station reservoir will have a variety of impacts. It may affect the efficiency and effectiveness of reservoir water resource utilization and the sustainable development of the local social economy. For improving the water environment of reservoir area and achieving sustainable utilization of the reservoir water resource, it is necessary to study the reservoir water resource problems.In this paper, the mechanism how the construction of hydraulic and hydropower project affects the relevant water environment is quantitatively studied by analyzing and making analogy on the status of the water environment of the available hydraulic and hydropower projects and by investigating on the relevant methods for assessment on the impacts of these projects on the water environment. The theories, methods and measures for the water environment protection are also discussed and the inherent laws for reservoir water environment change is illustrated. Furthermore, it provides a practical mode for researching on water environment protection of other large or medium reservoirs in China. After the study, the concrete methods for application of reservoir water quality prediction model and reservoir eutrophication prediction model are proposed, which may provide scientific bases and reliable tools for reservoir water environment management as well as for comprehensive control and treatment of reservoir water pollution. Practically, it may enable the reservoir water resource to meet the requirements for sustainable development of social economy. It can also provide technologies for pollution prevention and pollution source control as well as the basis for planning the local social economy development. Moreover, it man put forward the sustainable utilization of reservoir water resource and achieve the maximum engineering benefit of the reservoir, therefore contribute to the local economy development.The trend of the water quality change in the hydropower-station reservoir is primarily studied with emphasis on how to quantitatively determine the impact of hydropower station construction on water quality. Referring to the worldwide studies on reservoir, the water environment of Langshitan hydropower-station reservoir in Lengshuijiang municipal city, Hunan province and Longxiang hydropower-station reservoir in Hunan province is investigated.
