Abstract/Summary:
Zhanjiang and Yangjiang are important coastal cities in the west of Guangdong province. Zhoushan archipelago is a famous fishery of our country with abundant oceanic resources. With the development of economy, the increase of population and the construction of harbor, the problems of environmental pollution are becoming more and more serious. Among kinds of pollutants, heavy metal attracts more attention because heavy metals can't be decomposed by organism and could be accumulated through food chain. The effects of economic and social development on coastal environment gradually increase, but the researches on heavy metal pollution in sediment of Western Guangdong and Zhoushan archipelago are very limited. An extensive investigation on heavy metal pollution in sediment of Zhanjiang Harbor and Hailing Bay (Yangjiang) was carried out in 2004, another investigation on Zhoushan archipelago was carried out in 2005. The source, distribution and pollution degree of heavy metal are discussed. The results are very important for prevention of marine pollution and environmental protection of Zhanjiang, Yangjiang and Zhoushan archipelago.13 surface sediment samples from deepwater zone and 7 surface sediment samples from intertidal zone are collected in Zhanjiang Harbor; 10 surface sediment samples from deepwater zone and 8 surface sediment samples from intertidal zone are collected in Hailing Bay; 36 surface sediment samples from intertidal zone and 1 surface sediment samples from deepwater zone are collected in Zhoushan archipelago. The sampling was carried out from September the 23th to October the 5th, 2004 and from July the 18th to September the 19th, 2005. The fine grain size fraction (<63μm) obtained by wet sieving method was applied to heavy metal analysis. Samples were collected and digested by HCl-HNO3-HF. The concentrations of As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Al, Ca, Fe, Mg, and Mn in sediment samples were analyzed by inductive coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry.In Zhanjiang Harbor, most of the sediment has not been contaminated, but the sediment near the dock yard in Port Office of Xiashan District was slightly contaminated by Cd, Cu and Pb, and the mariculture area in Techeng Island was also slightly contaminated by Cu. Statistic results showed that Al, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb and Zn in Zhanjiang Harbor are mainly input by terrigenous ways, while Ca, As, Mg and Mn mainly by interaction between seawater and...
