Two different kinds of rare earth complexes were synthesized .The first system contains conjugated vinyl carboxylate, i.e., 2-thienyl acrylic acid, 3-pyridyl acrylic acid and 4-vinylbenzoic acid, while the second one includes acrylic acid (AA). Seven rare earth complexs were synthesized by the reaction of Eu3+ with conjugated vinyl carboxylates and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen). It was found that AA was useless for luminescence in energy transfer, but it was benefical to the fluorescent property of complex. In the second system, the vinyl bond in the conjugated vinyl carboxylates leads to the formation of a bigger conjugate structure, which increases the electronic delocalization in the ligand. As a result, the lower energy of the vinyl bond containing ligand makes the ligand sensitized rare earth emission impossible. In the simple and feasible way, highly fluorescent Eu-polymer complexes were synthesized through copolymerzation of Eu(AA)3phen·H2O with methyl...
