As a untraditional manufacture process, Electrical Discharge Machining is extensively applied to manufacturing fields such as mould trade and auto industry, etc. Meanthile, EDM is playing an irreplaceable role. There is no fully developed theory to explain the mechanism of material erosion in edm well at present because of the complexity of EDM process. Former theory can't be used to satisfactorily explain some phenomena in EDM, so we must continue to explore the EDM theory, find out its inherent law and improve its theoretical foundation, which is not only meaningful to EDM theory, but also undoubtly promoting and facilitating the development of EDM technics at the same time.This paper analyze the heat conduction process and build a relatively rational model through considering both thermal current density load of gauss distribution and convection load, using material properties varying with temperature, solving phase change with law of the enthalpy. Analytic solution of temperature pattern of round heat sources is presented under the changing discharge channel radius with time and fixed input total power.The temperature fields of single pulse EDM are simulated by ANSYS against the model above and find out the relation between crater shape and discharge parameters through simulation under different pulse-on time and current.Finally, The paper design a single pulse power supply and do some corresponding experiments, the results testify the model have the preferable precision of prediction, laying a worthwhile theoretical foundation for continuous EDM simulation in the further.
