Numerical simulation using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method on the thermo-mechanical effects in metal plate under laser irradiation is studied from theory, program design and examples analysis in this paper. The main aspects of research works in this paper are as follows: Plenty of literatures are investigated related to the SPH method, and the theoretical foundations are summed up systematically, and a good understanding is obtained of the research progress on the SPH method and the development trend; Plenty of literatures are investigated related to the thermo-mechanical coupling, and a quite comprehension about the theories of the thermo-mechanical coupling is achieved; The discrete form of equations to solve the dynamic thermal stress is obtained by the SPH method; A program using the SPH method is generated to compute the thermal impact problems in the rectangular coordinate system, and to simulate the propagation of the thermal elastic wave introduced by the short-pulse laser irradiation; Compared to the results of finite difference method, good agreement is achieved, so the practicability and accuracy of the programs based on the SPH method are tested. The conclusion is that the SPH method is not only suitable for the simulations of large deformation problems with interface sliding, such as high speed impact, penetration, etc., but also able to be used in the problems of thermo-mechanical propagation.
