The tailing dam is refers to damming structured by valley mouth or surrounded land, used to store metal non metal mines for ore beneficiation tailings and other industrial waste residue discharge. In all kinds of disasters in the world, tailings dam break is ranked at eighteenth place, only lower than earthquake, nuclear explosion, flood, cholera and other disasters. At present, many of the tailing dams in China are in their middle and late period of service, and have the trend of heightening and expansion.Once the dams break, not only will causing casualties and property losser, but also producing serious environmental pollution and bad social impact.Dam break due to the sliding force over its shera strength is one of the most common form of tailing dam break. However, traditional simulation methods, such as Limit Equilibrium Method(LEM),Finite Element Method(FEIM)and Finite Volume Method(FVM),can calculate the safety factor and potential slip surface of the slope successfully, but have some difficulties in analysing the motion state after failure.Other simulation methods, such as Discrete Element Method(DEM)and Element-Free Galerkin method(EFG),also exhibit some defects in determining the non-physical parameters or describing the stress-strain relationship directly.Due to the disadvantages of tranditional methods,a new meshless method, called smoothed particle hydrodynamics method(SPH),was introduced to the tailing dam and slope stability and post-failure analysis field, which can not only obtain the safety factor and glide plane of slope, but also can calculate the large-deformation or flow state of the soli after failure. However, the research of SPH in this field is still in the blank stage in demestic. In this paper, the basic concept and theory of SPH were introduced, and a new quartic spline smoothing function of SPH were proposed firstly to eliminate the pressure instability in SPH.Then, using the new tailing and slope stability and post-failure analysis procedure written in Fortran, which based on elastic-to-plastic model,Drucker Prager Yield Criterion and Strength Reduction Method(SRM),the accuracy of the method and procedure mentioned above was discussed by a typical slope stability analysis example, and the related factors which could influence the analysis accuracy, such as instability criterion, yield criterion, flow rule, were discussed. And then, due to the defect of traditional single-phase SPH method. The soild-fluid two phase SPH was introduced into the slope stability analysis field to analysis the slope with groundwater.Through a typical example, the results obtained from the proposed method and LEM(Bishop)was compared and the accuracy of the proposed method was proved. At last, two tailings dam was analyzed by this method and to predict and prevent the damage of disasters.
