The study and application of microwave irradiation in environment protection has attracted many environmental scientists, and in the field of wastewater treatment is one of the hotspots. In this dissertation, the technologies for the treatment of coking plant wastewater and the recent research on the environmental protection by microwave irradiation were reviewed. Aimed at the coking plant wastewater after biochemical treatment from Wuhan Iron & Steel Company, GC/MS was used for the analysis of wastewater composition. Meanwhile, deeply treating coking plant wastewater by microwave irradiation in the presence of granular activated carbon (GAC) was studied. The main results were as follows: (1) The coking plant wastewater after biochemical treatment has a mass of organic pollutants, which mostly are long chain hydrocarbon (Such as alkyl, alkene, alcoholize, ketone, ester, et al.) and aromatic compounds, heterocyclic compounds, and so on. (2) In the presence of GAC or GAC with Cu, the COD of studied wastewater was rapidly decreased to a prescriptive standard (COD≤100mg/L) by microwave irradiation. It was cooperation of microwave irradiation with catalyst adsorption that removed the COD in coking plant wastewater. Many heat points could be produced on the surface of GAC by microwave irradiation, and their temperature was so high that the organic pollutant adsorbed on the surface of GAC were oxidized and decomposed. This technique is a rapid, green method for coking plant wastewater treatment, and causes no second pollution. (3) The reaction process which the COD in coking plant wastewater after biochemical treatment was removed by microwave irradiation in the presence of adsorption catalyst abides by the first order kinetics. In the presence of GAC, the kinetics equation is: lnC=-0.00480t+4.888, reaction velocity constant = 0.00480 s-1, half life = 144s. In the presence of GAC with Cu, the kinetics equation is: lnC=-0.00520t+5.017, reaction velocity constant = 0.00520 s-1, half life = 133s.
