The ship model is an important tool for forecasting the sailing capability of its real prototype; it also acts as an important role in the ship research and teaching courses. With the continuous development in technologies of design and manufacture of ships, the process of ship model manufacturing puts higher demands on its method and equipments. Advanced manufacturing technologies should be introduce into the field of ship model shaping, and replace the traditional handcraft method. As the approximately substitute of ship testing, the reliable extent of ship model is nearly correlative to its geometrical approximate characteristic. Its scale of size must satisfy a certain extent of demand. The more important things are high precision of geometrical machining and enough lubricous underside of ship model. Otherwise it would make the error of experimental result enlarge. During the traditional process of manufacture, in general, that numerical control machine tool virtually run the NC code or testing cut more soft and cheap material can test the numerical control code. Therefore much time of real machining is consumed, the efficiency of machine tool is reduced. To adopt advanced imitative technique may use computer graphics virtually machining and observe tool motion. It can essentially enhance the efficiency of test and save labor force and manufacture resource. The followed is to take the ship model numerical control machine as an example, and to create 3D model of ship with software, and then to perform the imitation of machining process, finally to create NC code for numerical control machine tool. This paper makes an analysis of the actuality and the trend of ship/mode manufacturing, Based on this, it put forwards a kind of control system of Numerical Control (NC) manufacture machine for ship models. In this paper, firstly, this paper researches the 3D software Unigraphics and its secondary development software UG/OPEN GRIP and UG/OPEN API. Secondly, this paper discusses the key technique of numerical control ship model based on Unigraphics and the good methods to make ship model with the secondary development software. Thirdly, the paper introduces the methods that imitate the machining of ship model and create NC code by post processing. Finally, the paper discuss the method of machining ship model by motion control card that comes from Shenzhen Gugao company based on NC code. As the keystone of this dissertation, this paper emphasizes the methods of numerical controlling machining the ship model based on the secondary development of the software Unigraphics. In the meanwhile, it designs its software systems including four modules such as data pretreatment, ship model CAD, CAM and CNC.
