As a public nuisance, odor seriously affects the surrounding environment and people's health. On Jan. 15th, 1994, the State Environmental Protection Administration of China approved and implemented Emission Standards for Odor Pollutants (GB14554-93), which sets relevant regulations for the concentration of discharged odor pollutants and odor gases. As many residential quarters have been built in the surrounding areas of wastewater treatment plants in recent years, the air quality standard has been raised from Grade III for industrial areas to Grade II for urban residential areas. In order to ensure the normal life of residents in the surrounding residential areas and the health of employees of the plants, some odor-eliminating devices are going to be installed on some treatment buildings that give off stringent odors while renovating and expanding Jizhuangzi Wastewater Treatment Plant to further protect the atmospheric environment of Tianjin. The major purposes of this experiment are to find an appropriate method for eliminating odor for wastewater treatment plants, provide some experience for the operation of future wastewater treatment plants and at the same time offer some reference data for the operation of odor-eliminating devices of other wastewater plants of the same industry. By measurement of various parameters for eliminating odor in the experiment, it is found that the optimal operating point is 500 m3 treated gas per hour and the time of staying in the media is 18s. On this basis, the media is divided into 4 sections: 300mm, 600mm, 900mm, 1200mm. Gas from each section is collected for testing to work out the treatment capability of each section. The final conclusion is that the biological method is able to satisfy the requirements of wastewater treatment plants for eliminating odor. At the same time, some problems that need improvements or solutions are also identified.
