Studying On American Furniture Style And Its Contributing Factors

Although the history of the United States of America is only about two hundred years, the progressing of its furniture style is very complex. Basing on the process of the United States' history, this thesis studied not only the American furniture style and characters, but also the reason of its forming and developing. On the one hand, the thesis differentiated the style characters from the evolving of American furniture, on the other hand, it also concerned the effect coming from the outside world such as the factors of politics and economy. The thesis also summed up the macroscopic characters of American furniture and the microcosmic ones.1. The thesis discussed the progress of American furniture in such periods and styles as the period of Early colonial, Later colonial, Federal Style, the period of Victorian, the Modern furniture and the other special styles.2. From the macroscopic characters and the microcosmic ones of American furniture, this article discussed that American furniture style comes from Europe but differs from it, American furniture attach importance to furniture's function and practicability, and its style is very diverse and discussed the characters of its mould, material, structure and decoration.3. The thesis analyzed the contributing factors in the evolving of furniture style from the vertical perspective which includes such aspects as social history, economy, national traits, culture, science and technology, architecture and interior, religion, etc.4. Research was done on the world effect coming from the European furniture system and the Oriental one.The thesis tried to establish a new understanding toward the relationship between American furniture styles and the society which belonged to. It will be a good reference for American furniture designers in those enterprises making American furniture. It can also help us understand the relation between the development of society and culture and the evolving of furniture, and give some inspiration for establishing the modern Chinese furniture system.
