Synthesis And Characterization Of Polysiloxane Liquid Crystals Containing Azobenzene Mesogens

A series of new compounds based monoazobenzene and bisazobenzene containing nitroazobenzene group were synthesized by performing azo coupling in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst of sodium dodecylbenzenesulphonate (NaDBS). The four synthesized compounds were 3-(4-nitrophenyl-azo)-N-(6-hydroxylhexyl) carbazole, 3-(4-nitrophenylazo)-N-(10-hydroxydecyl)carbazole, 3'3-2(nitrophenyl-azo)-N-(6-hydroxulhexyl)carbazole, 3,3' -2(4-nitrophenylazo)-N-(6-hydr-oxyldecyl)carbazole. All of the synthesized compounds' structures were confirmed by the data obtained from IR and 1H-NMR.
