Since there are real demands to the fine powder of expansible graphite (FPEG) in the market, it was studied that glacial acetic acid were inserted into 2μm ~ 5μm micro-graphite using potassium dichromate, potassium permanganate, or ammonium persulphate as oxidant and acid as medium to get FPEG low expansible volume successfully. The effect of reaction weight of every reactant, reaction temperature and time, expansion temperature on the expansible volume were studied. The best process conditions of preparation of FPEG were found by analyzing results of orthogonality experiments and application experiments. It was proved that hot loss rate of FPEG was lower than the original graphite and the suspending capacity of FPEG was better than the original graphite by measuring expansible volume, granularity, hot loss rate, surface shape and appearance of FPEG. The detection of infrared spectrometer and ultraviolet spectrometer proved that glacial acetic acid had been inserted into graphite. With the application experiments of FPEG as component of anti-infrared smoke agent, it was proved that infrared extinction capacity of FPEG, whose expansible volume was 4.5mL g~-1~6.9mL g~-1, was greater than the original graphite. The results show that the product is a kind of new material which has a prospect of the potential application.
