There are many factors influencing the quality of low weight coated paper(LWC). Coating colors is one of the important factors. In this paper, we study the optimization of coating formulation of LWC. We want to improve the quality of LWC instead of art paper in printing.The research indicates that clay M01 is more fit for coating formulation of LWC than clay M03. The optimum ratio of the clay to ground calcium carbonate(GCC) in the formulation of LWC is 70:30;the optimum condition of dispersion of clay M01: pH 6.4, the dosage of dispersant is 0.125%;the optimum condition of dispersion of clay M03: pH 6.3, the dosage of dispersant is 0.125%.The results of the contrasting test of latex 3788 and latex 615 indicate that: latex 3788 is more fit for formulation of LWC than latex 615. We find that the optimum dosage of latex 3788 in formulation of LWC is 16%. We confirm the optimum ratio of latex to starch is 14:2 by adjusting the proportion of latex and starch..The research indicates that the optimum dosage of optical brightening agent in coating formulation of LWC is 0.4% and the optimum dosage of lubricant in coating formulation of LWC is 1.5%.We elementarily study the application of plastic pigment in coating formulation of LWC. The results show: using plastic pigment can improve whiteness, opacity, gloss, printed gloss, PPS, roughness and K&N. Hollow sphere plastic pigment H-B is more fit for formulation of LWC than hollow sphere plastic pigment H-A. We find that the optimum dosage of hollow sphere plastic pigment H-B in formulation of LWC is 4%(instead of GCC) and the optimal dosage of solid bead plastic pigment DS-PP801 is 8%( instead of GCC).We obtain two coating formulations of LWC. It is verified that all performances of LWC are up to the Agrade of national standards of art paper(GB/T 10335-1995). The following are three representative coating formulations:1. clay M01: 70 portion, GCC: 26 portion, hollow sphere plastic pigment H-B:4 portion, latex 3788: 14 portion, starch: 2 portion, liquid fluorescent agent: 0.4 portion, lubricant: 1.5 portion, other additives: as required, pH: 8~9, solid content of coating color: 63%.2. clay M01: 70 portion, GCC: 22 portion, solid bead plastic pigment DS-PP801: 8 portion, latex 3788: 14 portion, starch: 2 portion, liquid fluorescent agent: 0.4 portion, lubricant: 1.5 portion, other additives: as required, pH: 8~9, solid content of coating color: 63%.
