Synthesis of N-(2-benzimidazolyl) methyl carbamate (carbendazim) is of an importance because of a low yield on some byproducts in the industry. A intermediate used for N-(2-benzimidazolyl) ethyl carbamate was also prepared, because N-(2-benzimidazolyl) ethyl carbamate possibly exists some superior biological function.Carbendazim under a common pressure and a common tempreture was synthesized using cyanamide as a starting material, in the presence of the phase transfer catalyst followed by acidition reaction and cyclization reaction. The effect of catalyst and other reaction conditions to the product yield is mainly studied in the two main reactions processes. At the same time the synthesis of ethyl cyanocarbamate, the intermediate of N-(2-benzimidazolyl) ethyl carbamate, was also discussed.DSC, UV, IR, and 1H-NMR were used to analyze and characterize the synthesized compounds.
