It is an important research to accurately evaluate each flue gas desulphrization (FGD) technique's economic and technical capability in view of the goal coal-fired plant's actual condition and to synthetically choose the most usable technique for the plant.The expert system for coal-fired plants synthetically choosing FGD technique is researched in this paper and the expert system's model, structure, function and the method for establishing them are also presented by applying the methods of fuzzy synthetically decision and principles of inference engine. The founding process of the expert system mainly include the following: setting up the group of FGD technique being researched, setting up the group of factors of evaluating FGD technique synthetically, setting up the group of evaluating factor's weight, setting up the group of the quantitative factor's subordinate function, setting up the group of qualitative factor's fuzzy evaluation, setting up inference engine, setting up inference rules of knowledge base, setting up the data base of FGD technique's technical and economic coefficient, setting up the calculating model, setting up the synthetically choosing model.Firstly, the expert system eliminates those techniques that are not proper for the plant, and choose out some comparatively proper techniques. Secondly, the system synthetically chooses the most proper technique, and gives scientific demonstration. The characteristics of the expert system are that the system can analyze lots of qualitative, quantitative and uncertain factors that must be considered in choosing FGD technique for the plant and can make decision by fuzzy theory. The research of the expert system can present a good and fast assistant deciding tool for plants.A kind of software has already been developed based on the expert system and now the software is being tested by process of many coal-fired plants choosing FGD techniques. The testing results that are very accord with actual condition proved the expert system is reliable, practical for the coal-fired plants.
