As structure materials, titanium alloys are widely used in aeronautical and astronautical industry, due to their high specific strength—weight ratio, good strength properties at elevated temperature and high corrosion resistance. Dry grinding is a key process in machining structural parts of aviation titanium alloys. The workpiece surface is easy to burn when dry grinding because of the low thermal conductivity, small elastic modulus and high chemical activity of titanium alloys. Two thoughts of increasing inter-grits chip accommodation space of the grinding wheel and increasing solid lubricant are proposed in order to reduce the intensity of heat source, and thus two new grinding wheel are developed and their performance of dry grinding titanium alloys are evaluated.Multi-layer brazing diamond and cubic boron nitride (CBN) grinding wheel are prepared. The strength of grinding wheel meets the application requirements, the gap structure of diamond grinding wheel was well distributed, the graphite of CBN grinding wheel was evenly distributed in the free state, brazing achieved between binder and abrasive.Experimental study on dry grinding titanium alloys by super abrasive grinding wheel shows that the value of grinding surface Ra is 0.8μm can be get. The surface of work-piece does not burn. The machining efficiency and service life of super-hard abrasive grinding wheel are much higher than the traditional grinding tools.
