Tert-butyl ethyl malonate (TEM) is an important pharmaceutical intermediate, which is used in synthesis of antibiotics, vitamine, antimalarial, antipsychotics, aminophenol and etc. Nowadays in our country, TEM is mainly produced by a two-step method. In the first step, ethyl hydrogen malonate is produced by diethyl malonate (DEM), and in the next step TEM is synthesized by ethyl hydrogen malonate. Transesterification is a route in which TEM can be produced directly. As a result, the process can be shortened and the cost can be reduced. In this thesis, TEM was successfully synthesized with transesterification. Many effect factors were studied in both simple reaction and reaction distiller. In simple reaction, effects of the factors such as catalysts, catalyst quantity, feed ratio, reaction temperature and time were investigated. And in reaction distillation, effect factors such as feed ratio, reflux ratio and feed status were studied. Finally a suitable process condition was confirmed. The thermodynamics of both main and side reactions was computed and analyzed. The primary study and discussion of resin catalysts reuse was also referred in this thesis. Thus the foundation for green process of TEM synthesis was built.
