Diethyl malonate (DEM), as is often called Carrot acid ethyl ester, is an important fine chemical material, which is widely used in polyester, pharmaceutical, dyestuff and perfume industries. This article mainly discussed the properties, applications and synthesizing technologies of DEM and Ethyl acetoacetate (ACE). The traditional material of synthesizing DEM was NaCN, but this method would greatly destroy the environment. In this paper, Claisen method was used to synthesize DEM and ACE. After analyzing the mechanism of this method, a lot of conditions such as catalyst, solvent, reaction time, reflux time, ration temperature and reflux ration were discussed. So this novel method proposed a green technology for synthesizing DEM.In this paper, HLG-1and HLS-1are used as catalyst and solvent respectively. The optimal synthetic conditions for DEM are as follows:the volume ratio of xylene and Diethyl carbonate is2:1, reaction time is5h, mole ratio of Ethyl acetate(EA) is5:1, reflux ration is10:5, reflux time is0.5h, temperature is125℃. In these conditions, the yield of DEM and ACE are49.32%and37.77%respectively.
