Research On The Words Of The Ming Dynasty Costumes

Clothing culture is an important part of Chinese culture and clothing words are also a special object of research on Chinese words. This thesis, from the angle of social system and culture, attempts to classify and analyze the words of the Ming Dynasty costumes to inquire into their accurate meaning, rationale and their cultural meaning in the social environment at that time.In Chapter one, the part of Introduction, the source of the words of the Ming Dynasty costumes used in the thesis and ways used to interpret such words are provided. In addition, a brief summary of the related studies is given to show the significance of the present research. the material and cultural bases of the development of the Ming Dynasty costumes research and the characteristics of the development are presented.Chapter Two interprets the words of the Ming Dynasty costumes. The words of Ming Dynasty costumes fall into many different categories, such as hair-styles, hair accessories, head clothing words ,body clothing words, waist clothing words and foot clothing words. In this thesis, the words of Ming Dynasty costumes are interpreted in the terms of head clothing words, body clothing words and foot clothing words. Special interpretation is attached to some words without clear meaning reference, such as juebian, yanbian and yesa.Chapter Three briefly analyzes the rationale types of the Ming Dynasty Costumes and then concludes that the main rationale types of the Ming Dynasty Costumes are the onomatopoeia type, the characteristic type and the substitution type.Chapter four makes an analysis of the Ming Dynasty costumes words from the angles of the constitution of the Ming Dynasty costumes words system, the word formation and the cultural meaning of the Ming Dynasty costumes words, and then generalize the characteristics of them.
