Some Criticisms On Searle's Chinese Room Argument

The Chinese Room Argument was devised by John Searle which was used to against the strong Artificial Intelligence.Searle defined the strong Artificial Intelligence as "the appropriately programmed computer really is a mind, in the sense that computers given the right programs can be literally said to understand and have other cognitive states".In order to refute this opinion,Searle made a thought experiment named The Chinese Room. By this experiment, Searle argue that all the things which the man in the room had done is only operating on the symbol,he does not understand any Chinese symbol at all,the operating itself is not the understanding.The computer also does not understand any Chinese symbol and the program in it does not have any connection with the understanding.This paper is used to discuss Searle's Chinese Room Argument,I introduce the background on which Searle proposed the Chinese Room Argument and the Chinese Room Argument in the first part.In the second part,I describe several antecedents of Searle's Argument and the replies to the Chinese Room Argument from other scholars.In the third section,I propose a new refute against to the Chinese Room Argument,this refute,in my opinion, is able to confute Searle's Argument in the way that disscuss specifically about the detail in the thought experiment.The forth part relate to two important problems behind the Chinese Room Argument,the first problem refer to the relation between the intentionality and meaning,the second one concern to Searle's cognition about the strong Artificial Intelligence.According to the demonstration of these problems,I think Searle's Chinese Room Argument is failure to break down the strong Artificial Intelligence.At last,I make a conclusion in which reveal my view that the future of the strong Artificial Intelligence is bright and Searle's Chinese Room Argument can't stop it's development.
