All samples from Huanghe source region in Tangnaihai, Qinghai were analyzed to characterize their chemical compositions. Based on the chemical compositions, tectonic environments of source rock, weathering processes through Huanghe basin and the provenance indicator of Huanghe sediments were roughly discussed by comparing the samples to the loess, Huanghe estuarine sediments and Bohai surface sediments. The major element was studied to understand the intensity of chemical weathering in this region. And The chemical index of the alteration (CIA) of the samples are from 59.67 to 64.34 with a mean of 64.34, which was similar to loess, Huanghe estuarine sediments and Bohai surface sediments. The index of CIA shows that the chemical weathering in huanghe basin is considerably low, which reflect the cold and dry climate while the source rock of the sediment was weathering.Rare Earth Element (REE) and other trace elements, including high filed strength elements(HFSE), large ion lithophile(LILE), transition metal elements(TTE) were analyzed to reveal the tectonic environments of source rock and the provenance indicator of Huanghe sediments. The REE abundance normalized to chondrite meteorite displayed enrichment in light REE and depletion in heavy REE with a medium negative Eu anomaly(δEu=0.68) and a slight Ce negative anomaly(δCe=0.94). While the REE normalized to the North American Shales(NASC) showed no fraction of REE. Based on the research in trace elements, the composition of the samples is close to the upper curst.Comparing the composition of the samples with loess, Huanghe estuarine sediments and Bohai surface sediments, it is implied that the composition of their source material has the smiliar geochemistry characteristic.
