In our country, loess area is one of the places where the geological hazard is highly occurred. As a result of inevitability and regionality of geological hazard, as well as the restriction of the current national economic level, it is impossible to control all the geological hazard spots. Therefore, based on the study of geological hazard characteristics,laws of temporal and spatial distribution as well as formation conditions in losses areas, the study on geological hazard assessment will provide Government and the Land Planning Department with reliable basis of land planning, hazard prevention and reduction, hazard management and decision-making.Traditional geological hazard assessment is on the basis of vast field survey, mainly qualitative assessment. Its data acquisition and the expression of achievement are almost completed by hand. By using GIS technology, geological hazard assessment is liberated from the complicated manual labor, shortens the assessment cycle and provides the basis for the dynamic assessment. In combination with geological hazard detailed investigation in Pengyang, the geological hazard assessment is based on the GIS and the information model. Assessment results are in accordance with the actual situation. The specific contents are as follows:(1) On the basis of remote sensing interpretation and field survey, the geological hazard cataloging in the history is accomplished, as well as the geological hazard development overview and types have been comprehended.(2) On the basis of field survey and the study of natural geological environmental conditions, geological hazard characteristics,laws of temporal and spatial distribution as well as formation conditions of Pengyang County are clarified.(3) Referring to research background at home and abroad, we summarize the basic theory and improve the GIS-based geological hazard assessment.(4) Geological hazard assessment spatial database system is established in Pengyang County, Ningxia.(5) Geological hazard assessment index system is made up. And, a large number of meaningful attempts that how to extract indexes and divide assessment units are tried.(6) Ultimately, based on the GIS and information model, geological hazard assessment of Pengyang County was achieved. Assessment results are in accordance with the actual situation.(7) In combination with geological hazard detailed investigation, we put forward countermeasures and proposals of geological hazard prevention to Pengyang county.
