Currently, the basic petroleum exploration pattern adopted by domestic explorationists is to integrate seismic findings with petroleum geologic data and then identify the depth, shape, area and oil bearing layer property of traps at depth. However, the critical parameters regarding hydrocarbons' existence, property and accumulation distribution are all assumptions deducted from the seismic and geology data. Reservoir forecast and decisions of drilling location based upon those assumptions led to the low success rate of drilling wells. Microbial oil survey technology could not only study the correlation between surface microbes and reservoir at depth but also depict the hydrocarbon charged zones of different intensity, identify the distribution of oil,gas and water and provide reservoir characterization service for petroleum production. Geochemical and microbial data have found their greatest utility when used in conjunction with available geological and geophysical information. This article described in detail of microbial oil survey technology,3D geology modeling and computer graphic processing techniques and systematically analyzed the pros and cons of geophysics, geochemistry and microbial exploration technologies respectively. Based upon the petroleum geology, seismic, microbial anomaly and sorbed soil gas data collected from Microbial Survey Project conducted in Bozhong 6-1 structure of Bohai Bay, an Explanation Model of microbial oil exploration is designed and established by utilizing Petrel? modeling software to combine geology statistics with geology modeling and computer graphic processing techniques. This explanation model visualized the strikes of faults and fractures; delineated the shape of the traps controlled by faults and folds and displayed the relationships between surface microbial anomaly & geology structure. It could also be used as a tool to study hydrocarbon migration mechanism and eventually provide new scientific basis for a new integration exploration model which is a multidisciplinary methodology based upon petroleum geology and utilizing seismic exploration as primary, microbial oil survey as assistive technology.
