The 3D GIS is one of the newest trends of the development of GIS science. Comparing with 2D GIS, 3D GIS provides human with realistic feeling and immersion feeling. It constructs geographic objects with three-dimensional formation technology. It describes not only the horizontal relationships of spatial objects, but also the vertical relationships. One important research content of 3D GIS is three-dimensional visualization. Three-dimensional visualization technology has been maturely applied to the fields, such as digital globe, digital city and virtual community at present. There are a number of three-dimensional visualization platforms which respectively have own advantages and disadvantages.Based on the analysis of different three-dimensional visualization platforms, the thesis comes up with a method which combines ArcGIS with Google Earth and combines ArcScene with Google SketchUp in practical application. The Quick Import tool of ArcGIS converts global airport dataset of Google Earth to GIS and then ArcGIS selects features by attributes and by location from the layer and do statistical analysis. At last the Quick Export tool returns the analysis results to Google Earth. ArcGIS to SketchUp6 Plugin exports geographical data of East China Normal University's Zhongshan campus with spatial reference into SketchUp and imports fine three-dimensional models (such as Geography Building and Art Building) into ArcScene or ArcGlobe , which are constructed by SketchUp. The thesis brings up a geocomputation problem of center airport. Based on spatial location of global airport, the program finds out the shortest average distance to other airport. The program is compiled by R language. The distance is computed by direct approach and matrix method. The first one computes the distance between any two airports twice and the second one computes once, but needs big memory, especially when distributing a big matrix. The thesis consists of 5 chapters. Chapter One is the introduction of the types of geo-information visualization, the methods of visualization and three-dimensional visualization platforms. It also summarizes research state in the fields of theoretical study, developing systems and application research and puts forwards research contents, goals and meanings of this paper. Chapter two introduces three-dimensional visualization platforms. It studies two ArcGIS 3D analyst extensions (ArcScene and ArcGlobe). It analyzes Google Earth's functions and its data interchange file format(KML) which how to express geographical objects such as point, line, polygon, model, raster. It studies SketchUp' functions of the three-dimensional modeling and data interchange between three-dimensional visualization platforms. Chapter three presents data interchange between three-dimensional visualization platforms using cases. Cases of Chinese prefecture-level cities, Chinese main railways and Chinese provinces demonstrate how to represent GIS data on Google Earth. The case of virtual East China Normal University demonstrates how to build three-dimensional models with spatial reference by three-dimensional modeling soft- SketchUp. Chapter four demonstrates the integrated application of ArcGIS and Google Earth through global airports dataset. ArcGIS converts the global airport dataset of KML format to shapefile, then spatially analyzes its distribution and returns the analysis results onto Google Earth. Chaper five summarizes the revolutions and shortages of this paper and supplies the possible future researches.
