The ecological study of phytoplankton was conducted on twelve typical sampling stations in Xingkai Lake at May 2007, July 2007 and October 2007. All the samplings were carried on qualitative and quantitative analysis in laboratory. Phytoplankton communities and biodiversity were examined by multivariate statistic analysis. The correlation between phytoplankton and environment was determined by Pearson analysis. The paper provided referenced evidence for the management of water resource in Xingkai Lake.Total of 6 phyla 62 species were identified, among which, the majority were Clorphyta (23) and Cyanophta (22), followed by Bacillaroiphyta (12), the other is (5), and Clorphyta was the dominant group in total phytoplankton. The total mean abundance and biomass were 2198.38×10~4 ind./L and 93.82mg/L. The results of ANOVA (analysis of variance) for three biodiversity indexes showed that there was a remarkable change in different stations and seasons. There were different ranges in different diversity index, Shannon-wiener's index was from 0.18 to 4.48, Margalef's index was from 0.22 to 5.22, and Pielou's index was from 0.04 to 0.66. Seasonal comparison of Margelef's index and Pielou's index were spring >summer > autumn, and Shannon-wiener's index was spring > autumn > summer .According to the indicative function of some phytoplankton, combined with every season's dominant phytoplankton the evaluation results of water quality indicated that the quality of Xingkai Lake was not bad, but was a little eutrophicated during autumn, and improved during spring and summer. The results of multidimensional scaling (MDS) in each season and sampling station indicate the strucrure of phytoplankton community is complicated. Based on Pearson analysis, the results revealed that the correlation between phytoplankton abundance, biomass and most environment factors chosen in this study was not very prominent, except for chlorophull.
