With the development of such technologies as Geographic Information Science(GIS), Virtual Reality,Internet,Computer Graphics,an increasing need for Web based Virtual Geographic Environment(Web-VGE) is observed in many areas.Focused on the nearest approach of global Virtual Reality and Virtual Geographic Environment,this paper analyzes the realization mechanism and developing techniques. Searching resources from network and present technologic data,a much reasonable scheme has been gotten.By integrating J2EE,Java3D(three dimensional display technology),and Socket,a four-tier distributed platform-independent prototype of succinct VGE platform has been developed,and its efficiency has been proved.The model is described as the following four layers:VGE spatial data layer,VGE Server side Engine layer,Web application layer,and Client browser layer.The study found that,in cross platform environment,J2EE based VGE framework has a huge advantage compare to other frameworks.A J2EE based System can be much more flexible,retractable,expandable.Based on Java3D and Socket,it not only realizes the internet transfer and display of VGE data,but also brings the inter-operability to the system and achieves 3DGIS Analysis in internet environment.Compared to VRML based VGE technology,this solution could be much more secure,high performance,powerful,and flexible.The meaning of good to the platform independent and internet based Virtual Geographic Environment of this study has been proved from theoretical and technical aspects.
