Guizhou province is Chinese typical karst distribution region, the acreage that carbonate rock emerged account for 70% of guizhou province area; red clay that formationed form carbonate rock is the most soil of guzihou, which is important foundation resource and construction material. So, red clay classification researching could be used to engineering applied purpose. In our country, it is more than 50 years study on red clay, and has much understand about this special clay. though guizhou red clay has high liquid limit, high plasticity, big void ratio, it has better mechanics strength, medium-low compressibility. However, partial red clay has swell-shrink characteristics that do harm to engineering, some partial has soft characteristic as low strength, high compressibility, and some partial has size fraction like mixed soil. In the paper, classifying the red clay that engineer characteristic are different from the most red clay through field investigation and analysis on that.In the paper, the standpoint that the main guizhou red clay formed stage is karst—residual sedimentation and laterrization—red clay formed two stages; Based on the study production of the red soil, guizhou red clay is classifyed into five style in the paper, they are normal red clay, secondary red clay, swelling red clay, soft red clay, and mixed red clay. To discuss guizhou red clay classification system and applied of some index in classification, to confirm guizhou red clay stander and soil properties initially; in the paper, to discuss different engineer problem and processing method that are brougt by different engineer properties; at last of the paper, to table a farther study proposal on guizhou red clay classification.
