With the development of society, people are now increasingly demanding on optical quality and imaging performance of camera lens. In order to meet such above requirements, designers adopt various methods to improve the optical quality and imaging performance, among which the substitution of aspheric surface for spherical surface is proved to be efficient. Compared with spherical surface, aspheric surface can simplify the lens structure and improve the quality of the image for its more design variable, which makes the reduction of aberration much more easily. In recent years, aspheric surfaces have been extensively used in lens design for the improvement of computer techniques and aspheric surface manufacturing & testing technology .Based on the design theory of camera lens, we optimized the initial structure through the substitution of aspheric lens for spherical lens, using ZEMAX , and a double Gauss lens with aspheric surfaces was designed. The advantage to apply aspheric surface in lens design is also presented by the imaging performance of this lens. The thesis consists of five chapters. Aberration is the key problem during lens design. First of all, the basic theory of aberration is introduced, including seven kinds of primary aberrations and primary aberrations theory of thin lens. Chapter two demonstrates the optical properties and structure features of camera lens. In chapter three ,we study the fundamental structure and general methods of lens design .During the design process, we always choose a certain basic structure as an initial structure from patent literatures or manual ,and then optimize the initial structure to reduce and balance the aberration according to requirements .So it is necessary to master all kinds of basic structures . In chapter four ,we introduce the general knowledge about aspheric surface, such as its merits and manufacturing methods .Mathematics expression & primary aberration of aspheric and analysis of aspheric surface location are also presented. In chapter five, the most popular kinds of software in optical design are firstly introduced. Then, a double Gauss lens with aspheric surfaces is designed using ZEMAX . This lens has much higher imaging qualities than the normal lens with spherical surfaces, and the superiority of aspheric surfaces in lens design is shown .
