Ice detecting is a topic which is concerned by many subjects and many projects, such as ocean monitoring, environmental protection, water conservancy and hydropower engineering construction and off-shore oil development. The ice appearance and disappearance directly or indirectly related with the field atmospheric environment, the water temperature, the water salinity, the water depth, the water rapids and the water condensation nucleus. The most direct and important detection index is ice thickness and its change in many detection indexes. At present, it is very backward for ice monitoring in the north of China, there is no advanced measuring equipment, the majority of detecting task is completed by people,it is a "the technology, the equipment blind area" of hydrology automatic monitor and icy disaster early-warning system in China. The dynamic monitoring of floating ice is a worldwide difficult problem.This article mainly elaborated the design and realization of ice detecting system which has a brand-new GPS satellite positioning function. Combined the automatic measuring equipment with the advanced satellite technology, the automatic detection of the fixed-point and the flowing floating ice and the long-distance transmission of data are realized. This provides a new technological method for continuous detection of the floating ice in northern area of China, offshore and sub-polar region, and safeguards the normal proceeding of national water conservancy work and the people's life and property.This article first elaborated the topic's research goal, significance and the present situation of ice thickness detection in domestic and abroad. Analyzed briefly ice detecting system's structure and function, Introduced emphatically detecting ice thickness's method by using electrical conductivity of water, weak electrical conductivity of ice and electrical insulation of air. Elaborated working principle, hardware constitution and software design of ice detecting system which has GPS positioning function in detail. The data acquisition aging experiment of measuring equipment which has GPS positioning function had been done in state key laboratory of seacoast and offshore project in Dalian University of Technology, GPS positioning experiment had been done in Taiyuan University of Technology. This paper analyzed the experimental data in detail, proved instrument's reliability and usability.This paper is an application foundation research which is aided by the item of national natural science fund "the research of the ice layer thickness sensor and its detecting method" (60672028).
