Three Gorges Project has attracted worldwide attention. With the completion of the Three Gorges reservoir and water storage, most of urban are directly constructed along the reservoir banks. How to resolve the complex and special characteristics of the landslides are important issues for urban construction in the reservoir area. The formation in WanZhou District is flat, but has distributed a lots landslides, such as Taibaiyan,Diaoyanping,Pipaping,Anlesi,Diaoyanping landslides and so on. Therefore, it has great significance for making a study of causes of ancient landslides,the current stability and preventing measures in WanZhou District.This paper takes the WanZhou District landslides as typical landslide study for the Three Gorges Reservoir area. Via to collecting the previous research results, and based on field surveys, the paper studied further the natural environment and geological characteristics of landslides. And analyzed the scale, sliding zone, landslide, formation litho logy, geomorphology and structure of landslides in WanZhou district. Based on the characteristics of landslides, the development of landslides is made of a few stages. In time, WanZhou landslides can be divided into ancient landslides and the late deformations. In space, ancient landslides distributes zonal and blade, and the deformations distribute in the front of ancient landslides. According to analyzing the impact factors of ancient landslide, it considers that the mechanism of deformation and failure for ancient landslides is multi-level translational sliding landslides. When ancient landslides are in the Hydrostatic pressure and dynamic artesian water, the front slide block is first skidded off. In addition, as the head dispersed, the behind slide blocks followed by, and pond a trough valley in behind landslide margin. The revival of deformations has specific loose material components, which will occur creep—rupture landslide under some impacted factors: rainfall, rivers further cutting , human construction activities and so on.This paper used discrete element method and simulated landslides in light of the above mechanisms of deformation and failure. It is supposed that multi-level translational sliding landslides is rigid block for the ancient landslide, and simulated the process of deformation and failure under the Hydrostatic pressure and dynamic artesian water. At the same time, It is supposed that the revival of deformation is deformable material. The result of simulation reveals that the revival of deformation will occur creep progressive deformation on own gravity, and will come about deformation and failure in some head.The paper stressed that the importance of Hydrostatic pressure and dynamic artesian water on the stability of the ancient landslide, and evaluated single-and multi-level translational sliding landslide' s stability. Meanwhile, it improved the stability formula for the revival of deformation of WanZhou District. Taking Taibai ancient landslide and Guantangkou deformation for example, it calculated the stability for ancient landslide in different head, and the stability of the guantangkou deformation.Finally, it is necessary to build channels for drainage surface and groundwater to control the ancient landslides, recommend local branch block for the deformations, and use preventing measures for perilous rock.
